Pete Rugolo • The Music From Richard Diamond

Biography
by Richard S. Ginell
Pete Rugolo was one of the most prolific arrangers for Stan Kenton's 1945-1949 orchestras, following through on the leader's swashbuckling example to help shape the band's exciting, blasting style. Brought to the U.S. at age five, Rugolo grew up in Santa Rosa, California, and became a student of Darius Milhaud at Mills College in Oakland. After a stint with the Army, he submitted an arrangement to Kenton and then settled in with the band, turning out a series of "Artistry in..." compositions ("Bass," "Percussion," "Bolero," "Boogie"), as well as some of the earliest, most startling pieces for the Innovations in Modern Music Orchestra. However, Rugolo soon gravitated toward pop, landing a position as music director of Capitol Records in 1949, where he cranked out arrangements -- some of which bordered on easy listening treacle -- for June Christy, Nat King Cole, Harry Belafonte (in his brief pop period), the Four Freshmen, and others. In 1957, he became music director of Mercury Records, making a number of albums for that label, and briefly led a big band in 1954. From the '50s onward, Rugolo moved into Hollywood, scoring TV series like The Fugitive and Run for Your Life, and several films. Consequently, his importance to jazz lessened as the years passed.

Pete Rugolo • Ten Trumpets & Two Guitars

Review by arwulf arwulf
A sequel to his cool, carefully mannered Mercury Perfect Presence Sound album Ten Trombones Like Two Pianos, Pete Rugolo's Ten Trumpets and Two Guitars showcases a skilled team of brass players who juggle trumpets and flugelhorns backed by a solid rhythm section featuring guitarists Howard Roberts and Al Viola. Although some of Rugolo's arrangements contain squirrel-like passages, most of the textures encountered here are characteristically cool and firmly rooted in traditional jazz. Rugolo invokes various trumpeters including Henry Busse ("Hot Lips"); Louis Armstrong ("Struttin' with Some Barbecue"); Clyde McCoy ("Sugar Blues") and Cootie Williams ("Echoes of Harlem"). In a friendly spirit of modernistic playfulness, the old time melody "Whispering" is revealed as the root of Dizzy Gillespie's "Groovin' High." The last two tracks feature only the guitarists accompanied by vibraphone and rhythm. This intriguing music was reissued on compact disc in 2007 by the Fresh Sound label as part of Rugolo's Exploring New Sounds.

Charlie Parker With Lennie Tristano • Complete Recordings

Charlie Parker and Lennie Tristano had mutual admiration and understanding for each other, and were good friends. However, their recorded output together is far from extensive and this CD contains the whole of it. Both were great jazz innovators, although Tristano was the fi rst to admit Bird’s pre-eminence among all musicians of that period. Their collaborative recordings consist of a variety of broadcasts, studio sessions, and even a couple of amazing duets recorded by Bird on his tape machine at Lennie’s house (presenting the only known recording that Charlie Parker ever made of “I Can’t Believe That You’re in Love with Me” and his only complete version of “All of Me”). Also featured throughout this CD are great stars such as Dizzy Gillespie, Fats Navarro, Miles Davis, Sarah Vaughan and Max Roach.

The Pete Rugolo Orchestra • Rugolo Plays Kenton

Review
by Scott Yanow
Since Pete Rugolo came to fame for his many arrangements for the Stan Kenton Orchestra and this was one of his last important jazz albums before he became largely a full-time writer for the studios, it seems only proper that the date finds Rugolo paying tribute to his former boss. Rugolo rearranged a dozen numbers originally recorded by Stan Kenton, including four -- "Minor Riff," "Theme to the West," "Artistry in Boogie," and "Capitol Punishment" -- he had co-written with Kenton. Using a big band that includes such Kenton alumni as trumpeter Buddy Childers, trombonists Milt Bernhart and Frank Rosolino, altoist Bud Shank, tenor saxophonist Bob Cooper, and drummer Shelly Manne, Rugolo does not merely re-create the past but instead comes up with fresh variations to such songs as "Eager Beaver," "Concerto to End All Concertos," "Artistry in Rhythm" and "Southern Scandal."

Pete Rugolo • New Sounds

Pete Rugolo was a jazz composer and arranger. He was born in San Piero Patti, Sicily. His family emigrated to the United States in 1920 and settled in Santa Rosa, California. He started his musical career playing the baritone, like his father, but he quickly branched out into other instruments, notably the French horn and the piano. He received a bachelor's degree from San Francisco State College, and then studied composition with Darius Milhaud at Mills College in Oakland, California.

After he graduated, he was hired as an arranger and composer by guitarist and bandleader Johnny Richards. He spent World War II playing with Paul Desmond in an army band. After WWII Rugolo went to work for Stan Kenton who headed one of the most progressive big bands of the time. Rugolo provided arrangements and original compositions that drew on his knowledge of 20th century music, sometimes blurring the boundaries between the ballroom and the concert hall.

While Rugolo continued to work occasionally with Kenton in the 1950s, he spent more time creating arrangements for pop vocalists, including June Christy, Peggy Lee and the Four Freshmen. During this period he also worked for a while on musicals at MGM, and served as an A&R director for Mercury Records in the late 1950s. Among his many albums were Adventures In Rhythm, Introducing Pete Rugolo, Rugolomania, Reeds In Hi-Fi and Music For Hi-Fi Bugs.

In the 1960s and 1970s Rugolo did a great deal of work in television, contributing music to a number of popular shows including Leave It to Beaver, Thriller, The Fugitive, The Challengers, and Family. He also provided scores for a number of TV movies and a few theatrical features. Rugolo's small combo jazz music featured in a couple of numbers in the popular movie Where The Boys Are, under the guise of Frank Gorshin's "Dialectic Jazz Band." While his work in Hollywood has often demanded that he suppress his highly original style, there are some striking examples of Rugolo's work in both TV and film. The soundtrack for the last movie on which he worked, This World, Then the Fireworks (1997), demonstrates his gift for writing music that is both sophisticated and expressive

Entre sus muchos álbumes se encontraban Adventures In Rhythm, Introducing Pete Rugolo, Rugolomania, Reeds In Hi-Fi y Music For Hi-Fi Bugs.
